Until today I never heard the name, Carey Davis. I didn’t know who was the mayor of San Bernardino, CA. But I knew one fact about Carey Davis after listening to his interview on NPR:
NPR: Because these suspects were so heavily armed and justice officials have confirmed that they acquired their weapons legally, some people think that means there needs to be a change in our gun laws. Do you agree?
Mayor Davis: You know I really think that’s a conversation that needs to happen at the national level; a national dialogue.
NPR: There are some mayors who are taking it on as mayors. Many mayors.
Mayor Davis: It’s just at the time we’re dealing with… the important thing is to stay focused on the families. (I) just have a hard time seeing how it plays in with what the focus needs to be.
The fact that I was sure of at the conclusion of that interview without having to look it up, Carey Davis had to be a Republican.
The stats on the number of people dying from gun violence in this country are frightening: A mass shooting is defined as anytime 4 or more people are killed. America averages 355 mass murders a year; that’s almost a mass killing a day.
Isn’t it ironic that the same reactionary conservative voices that demand we engage in wars against any religion or country responsible for killing Americans can be so directly complicit in the daily mass murder of Americans on the homefront by refusing to show any maturity, any leadership or moral character when it comes to gun laws?
A politician, a community leader, a cleric, a citizen who today, on December 3, 2015 cannot utter the words,
WE NEED MORE RESPONSIBLE GUN LAWS
IS A SHAMELESS POLITICAL OPPORTUNIST; LIAR, HYPOCRITE, COWARD, ENABLER AND PASSIVE EXECUTIONER.
