As someone who has spent more years than I care to count in psycho-therapy trying to be an emotionally happier  person, I know how challenging it can be to live by the adage when life give you lemons make lemonade.  People who know me well will tell you that I am one person who doesn’t easily roll with the punches.

Cognitively and as a social worker I know that the challenges that life throws at us are best responded to by turning them into opportunities for learning and growth.  Frederich Nietzsche’s immortal, brilliant observation that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger is not hyperbole, it is actually an affirmation of faith and one of the surest strategies human-kind has devised for survival.

So who would have imagined just 30 years ago that one of the ugliest, most frightening, lethal diseases to ever afflict humanity, HIV, might some day turn out to be a lifesaving cure for a little girl with cancer?  Even in the world of the natural sciences, challenges can often times turn out to be exciting new opportunities.

Check out this video and I dare you to tell me that when one window closes another……. somewhere,  another does  not open.
