Those of us who are passionately committed to civil liberties are always left perplexed by those on the religious right that would have the government legislate their beliefs into law. In a pluralistic democracy, why should the distinct values or religious doctrine of any one faith community be imposed on the entire population?
Kudos to Rabbi Barry Dolinger of Rhode Island for promoting this important idea of how a democracy should ideally operate so cogently and eloquently as he did at a recent hearing state senate hearing on marriage equality.
