Could you picture Rick Santorum giving one of his daughters his blessings to marry her ‘girlfriend?’  Or, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announcing that he is actually interested in doing something constructive in the Senate this year other than working on denying Barack Obama a second term?

For many Americans, T.V. evangelist Pat Robertson’s announcement today that he thought that the government should legalize marijuana was just as incredulous. The social and political conservative who likes to regularly blame natural disasters on the sins of humanity (e.g Hurricane Katrina was God’s vengeance on New Orleans for the city’s tolerance of LGBT people), shocked his regular viewers and much of the world by suggesting that Mary-Jane, should now have the same status as alcohol.  Robertson told the NY Times:

“I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,”I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.”

Most conservatives blanch from the suggestion of legalizing the popular recreational narcotic.  Many people believe that pot use inevitably leads to the abuse of more dangerous and addictive drugs. The renown 81-year-old preacher, successful businessman and failed Presidential candidate, believes that the legalization of pot can only benefit government budgets, strengthen law enforcement resources and bring a definitive conclusion to a part of the war on drugs that the government is obviously not winning.

A religious zealot with instincts for intellectual honesty and practicality?  What next, Mitt Romney will stick with a conviction that defies a popular opinion?
