Leonard Cohen’s immortal song, Hallelujah, has been sung by many, but it has never been done more sweetly than by 10 year old Shalev Menashe, of Israel. Even in Hebrew, the powerful emotions of longing, love and loneliness that Cohen managed to infuse into the song are evoked by Shalev’s angelic, but powerful voice.
The fact that the song invokes the story of the ‘Hebrew’ King David, sabotaging his life and legacy for the sake of love, makes Shalev’s beautiful delivery all the more meaningful.
I for one, wish I could have seen Leonard Cohen’s face the first time heard this rendition.
Many thanks to one my favorite sources for great feature stories, David Vineberg.
