Every now and then, a Republican elected official lets’ his boorish anger and sense of right and wrong get the best of him. When that happens, he quickly shows the world how emotionally and intellectually immature he really is.
It happened last Friday at a meeting of the House Resources Committee. The hearing was called to discuss proposed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Prof. Douglas Brinkley from Rice University was invited to testify. Dr. Brinkley is passionate advocate for protecting America’s pristine forests and the environment.
Of course Dr. Brinkley’s testimony didn’t go over well with Republican Rep. Don Young of Alaska, who clearly has little value for or in interest in the environment. Like any good Republican, Young also has no tolerance for proposals that would put limitations on the private sectors freedom to rape and pillage any piece of land they want in the cause of greed.
Of course Congressman Young couldn’t take Dr. Brinkley on intellectually, so he did what hot-headed, loud mouth common conservatives do when confronting facts and information that trouble them, he behaved like a child.
Young referred to “Dr. Rice’s” testimony as “garbage.”
To his credit, Dr. Brinkley wasn’t about to let himself be bullied by an idiot with a title: he quickly responded:
“It’s Doctor Brinkley. Rice is a university. I know you went to Yuba College and didn’t graduate.”
Rule to Remember: Stupid people with fancy titles like “congressman,” don’t like to be dissed in situations in which they believe, only they have the right to be insulting and condescending. The angry Congressman whose district includes the entire state of Alaska, quickly responded,
“I’ll call you whatever I want! You just be quiet!”
Check out the video to see and hear more of the unfriendly exchange. BTW, if like me, you are embarrassed and pained at seeing yet another Republican legislator being derisive to people facts that challenge they loyalty to greed, I’m sure Rep. Young would love to hear from you too! (Remember to keep your words simple and to the point.) donyoung@house.gov
